RLC16 MK2 is the second generation of RLC16, as an optional reply module mounted in the MK2 system rack. RLC16 MK2 provides the addtional relays to MPC4MK2+IOC4MK2.
RLC16Mk2 module is available in a standard version (RLC16Mk2) and a SIL safety version (RLC16Mk2 SIL). On the surface they look similar, they both offer 16 user-configurable relays, and they fit into the same Mk2 system rack. However, the internal rules, safety behaviour, software controls and application boundaries are very different.

Whether you are designing a new rack system, reviewing spare part lists or planning a site retrofit, always map each relay channel to its intended function before placing your order. A clear distinction between monitoring duties and safety trip duties will help you avoid costly mistakes and keep your asset protection design robust.
FAQ
Q1: Can I use RLC16 Mk2 SIL for regular alarm functions if I do not need safety certification?
A1: Technically the relays will operate, but we do not recommend it. SIL modules cost more, they require manual setup after every hot swap and they carry rigid configuration rules that add extra maintenance overhead. Standard RLC16 Mk2 is the cost‑effective, simpler choice for ordinary alarm and indication tasks.
Q2: If I mix standard and SIL modules in one rack, will the software block the system from running entirely?
A2: It will not shut the system down completely. Newer software releases allow cross‑control between different variants. The restriction is functional: mixed combinations cannot be selected or validated as part of a SIL safety loop. It is acceptable for non‑safety auxiliary monitoring only.
Q3: Is the FAULT relay only present on the SIL version?
A3: Both variants include the common FAULT circuit relay. The difference is its role: for SIL versions, this FAULT relay becomes a mandatory part of the safety loop to remotely flag system faults. On standard units, it acts as a simple diagnostic alarm without safety enforcement.
Q4: Does the altitude limit apply only to the RLC16 Mk2 module itself or the whole rack system?
A4: The altitude rating applies to the full rack system. If your system includes any SIL‑rated modules for safety protection, the entire installation must follow the lower 1600 m altitude limit.
