Description:
The 163179-04 serves as the main card for the Bently Nevada 3500/63 Hazardous Gas Monitor. As a six-channel monitoring device, it functions as a key safety-system component by triggering alarm levels based on the concentration of combustible gases present. Specifically, an alarm from this monitor signals that the gas concentration has reached a threshold posing personal safety risks—either from potential explosion or asphyxiation.

Designed for use with heated catalytic bead gas sensors (compatible with both hydrogen and methane), the monitor displays hazardous gas concentrations as a percentage of the Lower Explosive Level (LEL). Additionally, it can be integrated into either simplex or redundant (Triple Modular Redundant, TMR) configurations of the 3500 Rack system.

This makes the Hazardous Gas Monitor particularly well-suited for enclosed or confined spaces where combustible gases are used as fuels, or where such gases are handled, pumped, or compressed. In these environments, a gas leak could lead to accumulation and subsequent formation of potentially explosive concentrations. As such, detecting and alarming on abnormal gas levels is critical for protecting both on-site personnel and equipment.

Examples of such confined spaces include housings around natural gas-fired industrial gas turbines, hydrogen pipeline compressors, and compressor doghouses—all areas where combustible gases may gather if a leak occurs.

When deployed in a Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) configuration, the Hazardous Gas Monitors must be installed adjacent to one another in groups of three. To ensure accurate operation and eliminate single-point failures, two types of voting mechanisms are implemented in this setup.
